More than seven years ago, Russell Bryant joined the Asterisk development team as a student at Clemson University.  Over his time with the Asterisk project, Russell has been instrumental in the creation, growth and management of the world’s most popular open source communications platform.  However, seven years is a long time to work within the confines of a single project and a desire for new experiences coupled with a desire to be closer to family has brought Russell to the decision to leave Digium effective July 29th, 2011.

Russell will join the Cloud Infrastructure Development Team at Red Hat.  While Russell will no longer be an employee of Digium, he will continue to participate in the growth of Asterisk and Asterisk SCF as a member of our vibrant developer community.  We look forward to building synergies with the Red Hat team through this new relationship and working to enhance the virtualized performance of Asterisk.

Digium sponsors Asterisk in part through the employment of a software development team focused on the development and maintenance of the project.  Moving forward, Kevin Fleming, Digium’s Director of Software Technologies, will direct these efforts as the interim leader of the Asterisk project.

Mark Spencer, Digium’s founder and the original creator of Asterisk had this to say regarding Russell Bryant’s contributions to the project, “At his job prior to joining Digium, Russell often came under fire for being ‘addicted to Asterisk’ and we were happy to feed that addiction. Every successful open source project relies heavily on strong leadership.  Through his unique combination of technical and leadership skills, Russell has been a big part of making Asterisk what it has become in the world of open source communications.  We will miss his daily contribution to the project, but we all understand his desire for new challenges and wish him much success in his new endeavors.  Red Hat is fortunate to have him joining their team.”

The entire Digium team thanks Russell for the contribution of his considerable talent, his positive attitude and his technological expertise.  We know that he will be equally valuable to our friends at Red Hat and we look forward to continuing to work with Russell in his new position.
