UC: Schools Making the Grade by Upgrading to VoIP

By Julie Webb

Schoolgirl (500)School systems face a multitude of challenges when considering transitioning from a legacy phone system to a more advanced unified communications (UC) solution. From tight budget mandates to lack of IT resources, selecting and deploying a new system that meets your needs can seem like a daunting task, especially considering the critical role a phone system plays on campus.

School officials need a solution that is not only easy-to-use and cost effective, but one that will improve the communication flow among administrators, faculty and parents/students.  The flexibility of the right UC system can improve efficiencies, reduce costs and be an integral part of a school’s safety process – as this California-based school system found out when it upgraded to Switchvox.

The Carey School, in San Mateo, California, is a primary school educating over 300 students. Over the years, the school’s multi-building campus has gone through various renovations. The largest and most recent construction project, since opening in 1928, included upgrading parts of the school that had not been touched for more than 50 years. As part of the overall campus improvement, the decision was made to also replace its outdated phone system with an advanced communications solution. This became a particularly important decision when the school determined that many students and teachers must be moved to portable trailers (as part of the construction project) and their legacy phone system would not be available in those make-shift classrooms.

The Carey School found themselves faced with an urgent need to find a phone system capable of communicating between the trailers and existing buildings during the construction phase. They also needed to carefully evaluate their long-term communications needs and find a cost-effective, feature rich system capable of growing with the expanding school.

When given the homework assignment to find such a phone system, The Carey School selected Switchvox, Digium’s UC Solution. To learn more about their evaluation process and the successful deployment across their campus, read the complete case study.
