One of my favorite things about working for Digium is that it’s a small company with a big heart. Each year, we adopt a charity to volunteer our time and resources to help further its mission. These charities have been on both the local and national level, and have included the Boys and Girls Club, A New Leash on Life, and, most recently, Manna House. While we select a new cause annually, there is one that we choose to support year after year, JDRF.
Mission to Cure
JDRF’s mission is to prevent, treat, cure and raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes, an incurable autoimmune disease that can affect anyone regardless of age, genetics or lifestyle. Currently, there are 1.25 million Americans living with Type 1 Diabetes, and that number is expected to rise to 5 million by 2050 if no cure is found.
This cause is especially dear to our hearts as our Director of Inside Sales, Jason Mefford, has a beautiful daughter who has been diagnosed with this terrible disease. Since being diagnosed in 2011, Emily Mefford must continually monitor her diet and physical activity, check her blood sugar by finger prick up to 12 times per day, and wear an insulin pump at all times. Knowing the struggle Emily bravely faces each day, we have been inspired to help find a cure for everyone battling Type 1 Diabetes.
Walking for the Cause
For the last 5 years, several Digium employees and members of Emily’s family have rallied together in honor of her to participate in the JDRF One Walk in Huntsville, AL. This annual event brings community members together to walk a 5k and raise money to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Jason’s daughter’s group goes by the team name of Emily’s Peeps and has managed to raise over $50,000 for research! This staggering number has made them the highest contributing individual team each year they have participated.
The annual walk is coming up this weekend, and we are excited to join all of the other teams who have the same desire to find a cure! We are very passionate about this cause, and we encourage you to find a JDRF One Walk happening in your area or to get involved in some way. Click here to find a local chapter near you.
