Hidden Benefits of Small Business Phone System Virtualization

In the November 27th blog on small business phone systems and virtualization, I wrote about economics as the primary driver for why a company might want to use a virtualized phone system. Since many phone systems, including those from Sangoma, are architected to run on standard, Intel type servers, this phone system “application” can be virtualized. So, a company has a choice when deciding if it wants to run its phone / UC system on-premise. It can either deploy the phone system on a dedicated appliance or it can deploy virtualized phone system software with other virtualized IT applications.

There are many benefits other than economics to choosing this approach. For example, many companies also have “green” initiatives because they want to be good corporate citizens (and/or because they want to reap some benefit of going green). Green could include recycling appropriate waste, setting targets for using less paper / generating less waste, and electricity savings to name a few. Virtualization has a side benefit of using less electricity. If there are fewer servers (because the various IT applications are now virtualized and running on one or two servers instead of ten to twenty servers), then we are looking at huge cooling savings, electricity savings, and real estate requirement savings.

In my old company, we had a lot of old IT systems due to many M&As. The data center room was very big. We undertook an initiative to look at what we had and how we could make it better. We chose to virtualize applications heavily (as well as get rid of unnecessary equipment). And the results were tremendous in terms of real estate savings and bottom line monthly electricity savings.
