Top 5 Reasons for an On-Premise Phone System

On-Premise UCThere are many good reasons to put your Unified Communications phone system in the cloud.  For example:

  • You don’t have to lay out the cost of the system upfront.
  • You don’t have to worry about upgrades.
  • And you probably won’t need a dedicated phone system specialist on your IT team (though you’ll need someone to administer the system).

All of these are good reasons. But that doesn’t mean they’re right for your business. An on-premise solution is actually a better solution for some businesses, depending on their needs.

What are the top 5 reasons to go on-premise?

  1. Overall cost over the lifetime of the system– While it’s great to forego the upfront investment for the system, if you plan on using that same system with no changes for at least 3 years, an on-premise solution could be more cost effective. It’s the same thinking behind leasing a car versus buying a car.

 

  1. Security – Some enterprises still just feel more secure with an on-premise system. Or there might be regulatory considerations related to the data that the system handles.

 

  1. Uptime of the system– Your cloud system is just that— operating in a cloud. As such, it can become subject to certain vagaries of the Internet, even if there is data center redundancy.  A traditional five 9’s model of uptime may not actually be attainable for everyone.

 

  1. Quality of service– Related to the point above is quality of service. If your network can’t handle your system’s bandwidth, one of the first things you’ll notice is a diminished quality of service. And your customers will surely notice that too.

 

  1. Your corporate stance on IT– It’s all about control. I’ve seen many different levels of IT involvement in my career. Some IT departments have a lot of influence in terms of protecting corporate data. In these situations, an on-premise phone solution may work best.
