Data Traffic Trends and the (WiFi) Impact on Enterprise Communications

A couple of weeks ago, I spent some time in a blog going over the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) report, specifically talking about the coming impact of video on the enterprise.

Let’s explore WiFi this time. As indicated in the graph above, WiFi is expected to generate over 50% of all IP traffic by 2022. Not just mobile traffic. All IP traffic, including fixed. And the total number of WiFi hotspots will grow to 549 million by 2022 (124 million in 2017).

But what does this mean to you if you are an enterprise business? It means your office will have the capability to truly be “everywhere”! You better be prepared to run your business from a mobile perspective!

This means your communication system needs to support mobility. Have an employee taking a trip to Beijing, London, or New York? Right now, you can easily connect to him or her (and not worry about data plan prices and caps) when that person is in the hotel room. Just use the desktop client. But, increasingly, it means you will be doing work and connecting to employees anywhere a WiFi connection exists, such at a local Starbucks. It means your business phone system better have a mobile / smartphone / tablet capable UC client. But it also means your traveling employees will no longer have any accessibility excuses.

Given how much collaboration is happening with these clients now, it also means the mobile client needs to be a collaboration and connectivity client.
