HUNTSVILLE, AL (October 19, 2004 ) — Digium Inc. today announced the release of Distributed Universal Number Discovery (DUNDi) and the General Peering Agreement (GPA). DUNDi provides a simple solution to the call routing problems experienced by VoIP users, much in the way that DNS servers have conjoined the Internet. This technology aids VoIP users by providing a significant improvement over current ENUM technology by increasing security and privacy, and adding authentication for services features, while also putting a limit on VoIP spam and other unwanted traffic. It will also identify partial numbers for use in advanced dial plans for analog phones, when combined with applications like Asterisk.
"In much the same way that Asterisk frees customers from vendor dependence in software, DUNDi frees customers from vendor dependence by implementing toll bypass," said Mark Spencer, president of Digium and author of Asterisk. "Now service providers can safely and securely bypass old private toll telecom networks and exchange calls for free."
DUNDi's architecture relies on peer-to-peer server relationships. Servers are connected as a graph data structure, and peers rely on simple yet efficient algorithms to lead a querying server in the right direction to its destination.
The General Peering Agreement (GPA) is a document that assures honesty, safety, security, and reliability among peer server managers who participate in the E.164 DUNDi trust group.
DUNDi overcomes a massive hurdle in the development of VoIP technology, and has the ability to launch VoIP technology forward in the years to come.
"We are very excited about using DUNDi in the Free World Dialup and our other communications ventures," said Jeff Pulver, CEO pulver.com. "Our experience so far has shown that DUNDi has tremendous potential to disrupt the status quo and will facilitate even more innovative peer-to-peer communications."
"Through the DUNDi project, SIPphone's global network of users will be able to easily call free the over hundred thousand small and medium sized businesses that have installed Asterisks," says Michael Robertson, founder and CEO of SIPphone (www.sipphone.com), a leading SIP-based network. "DUNDi provides another great reason why small businesses are moving away from the old PSTN world. Small businesses are some of the biggest victims of the absurdly high costs charged for voice services by the old-guard telcos" adds Robertson.
