What is a VoIP Phone?
A VoIP phone, also referred to as an IP phone, allows you to initiate and receive phone calls over an IP network. Though VoIP desk phones resemble traditional telephone sets that connect to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), they are actually small computers that convert audio into data that can be sent across the Internet. To send and receive the voice data, VoIP phones can utilize many protocols. The most common of which is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
Benefits of VoIP Phones
Because they are computers, VoIP phones offer users many additional benefits over traditional telephones. Most notable is their portability. In general, IP phones are easy to move from one location to another. Traditional telephones, however, require reprovisioning from a server with each move, which can take a considerable amount of time if multiple phones are being relocated. IP phones also have the ability to store contacts, making it easy to locate a name and dial out with the touch of a button. Additionally, the audio quality of IP phones is far superior than that of traditional telephones. Some IP phones feature high-definition audio, giving users crystal clear sound with each phone call.
